Why you should avoid Google Fonts

I've been asked to write this week's post on the Swivro blog, and as such I'm going to explain why you should avoid using Google Fonts, as well as just general typography and services hosted externally on third-party servers.  ~ Logan L Johnson 1. Longer load times and limited accessibility This is one of the main reasons why I removed Google Fonts and FontAwesome which was being loaded from their own third-party content delivery networks from swivro.net. For example, when one was to visit swivro.net, not only would a request be made to the server at swivro.net, but a request was also made to fonts.google.com, fonts.googleapis.com, and fontawesome.com. This is all unnecessary and constitutes a large increase in load time. Not only this, but it limits user accessibility to users which are on slow or limited data connections. Simply using web-safe fonts results in faster load times, as the user is only making a request to the website which they are visiting, not multiple co

A secure alternative to Gmail.

Gmail is one of the most popular mail services in the world.  It has around 1.6 billion people.  Much like CloudFlare, and googles other services, Gmail tracks every little thing you do.  Gmail also often has errors like unable to send an email to a certain address that works, trouble losing emails, and being slow. We are happy to give you an alternative to Gmail which is more secure (the more secure Email service in the world) and more efficient.  This is called, Tutanota . Tutanota is absolutely free, with no ads and they do not spy on you.  Tutanota also offers Android and iOS Support.  They also have a great design that is user friendly.  Lots of people are switching to Tutanota as it is way more secure than Gmail (and most other email providers), and it is also user friendly and lots of people also agree it does have a better design and is easy to use.  You can create a Tutanota account for free at https://www.tutanota.com/

Should I have Shared Web hosting, a VPS, or a Dedicated server?

When it comes to hosting your website or application, you will need to buy hosting from a hosting company.  The 3 main types of hosting that are very popular are a VPS (Virtual Private Server), a Dedicated Server, or Shared Web Hosting.  Now, a Virtual Private Server aka VPS is a Virtual machine on a dedicated server.  Think of it as you are running a virtual machine on your computer, whether is VMWare, VirtualBox, or Hyper V Manager.  They do the same, except usually assign a dedicated IP to the Virtual Machine and have it on a powerful dedicated server that can handle dozens of Virtual Machines.  A dedicated server is a server usually in a datacenter, but can also be in your own house, which is usually somewhat powerful, powerful enough to handle multiple heavyweight applications and host multiple websites.  If you buy shared web hosting, whether its from HostGator, Kavorti, BlueHost, or more, your website is hosted on the same server (it can be a VPS or dedicated server) as dozens,

PHP is the future.

PHP is a scripting language usually used for websites.  It was originally created in 1994 and still running today.  Did you know, PHP is installed on over 20 million websites and 1 million web servers?  Yeah, it sounds kind of crazy but it is true.  PHP Is the future of programming languages.  It has tons of features, and with it you can develop amazing mind-blowing apps.  For example, some of our most popular projects at Swivro, ( Swivro Plus , WeblySave ) are written in mostly PHP.  If we had never used PHP, we wouldn't have developed either of those projects, not even in another programming language, as PHP has all the necessary requirements we need.  Tons of people do not realize the potential PHP has of building amazing web applications and even desktop applications!  For this, we own an app called ElectronWeb.  It is a webserver written in ElectronJS which has PHP installed onto it, so you can put all of your web code in that web server (your web/website code does NOT have to

Why you should have more than enough disk space

Disk space matters. About 2 minutes read. Disk Space matters.  Whether you have an HDD,SSD, an SD Card, or some other form of storage, disk space always matters.  For windows 10, the recommended minimum amount of disk space is about 75GB, because of windows' size (usually 32gb - 40gb), and because you need more space for Windows Updates, 3rd party software, and more.  This doesn't just apply to windows, it applies to macOS, Android, iOS, Ubuntu Desktop, CentOS, Ubuntu Server, and almost every other OS, no matter if its a mobile device, a dedicated server in a datacenter, your work PC, or even your regular home PC.  We recommend that a standard PC that you plan to install other software on should have around 200GB of disk space.  If you do not have enough disk space, (lets say you have windows 10, and windows 10 itself is 32gb and you only have 40gb), and a system update occurs, it could be larger than your disk space capacity, and it could fill up your disk causing your system

A blog platform without a database.

So, most blogging platforms and CMS's in general use a database, usually PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or MySQL.  Lets say you have a server but it doesn't have enough disk space or even RAM (memory) to run any of those databases!  Well, we are happy to tell you a solution. HTMLy is a CMS and Blogging Platform which is lightweight, free, fast, and has no database.  You can run HTMLy on a PHP Version as low as PHP 5.3 and even on shared hosting.  No VPS or dedicated server is required to run HTMLy either.  With HTMLy being a great alternative to WordPress, HTMLy is also a bit similar to WordPress, so if you are familiar with WordPress, you will most likely understand HTMLy's interface easily and fast. HTMLy contains features like this: Admin Panel Markdown editor with live preview and image upload Categorization with category and tags (multiple tagging support) Static Pages (e.g. Contact Page, About Page) Meta canonical, description, and rich snippets for SEO Pagina

Why you should stop using Chromium Browsers now.

(Before you read this post, Chromium-based browsers are browsers created based on the source code of Google Chrome.  All of the facts listed below also apply to Google Chrome and any other chromium-based browser like Opera, Epic Browser, Vivaldi, and more.)  You shouldn't be using chromium-based browsers. Chromium browsers are linked to google, and google tracks every single little thing you visit, do, or search. The reason so many people use chromium browsers is because of their user-friendliness, making it easy for people not so good with computers to easily browse the web without much confusion. Chromium Browsers also use device fingerprinting, meaning they take all of the information about your system, save it to their database, and if you go to any other place whether its an app, or website that Google has access to, they will know that it is you. Google also uses chromium to see your search history and give you ads (sometimes even on the browser application itself) based on y

Archive your website for free

You can archive your entire website for free, including all of its pages and error pages using  https://web.archive.org/ .  Web Archive has archived over 400 billion websites since 1996.  You can even see what google looked like in 1998 ( https://web.archive.org/web/19981111184551/http://google.com/ ).  If you archive your website now, it will be permanently archived and in even 10 years you will be able to go back to web archive and see what your site looked like.  By archiving your website, if you get in some type of situation where you are not believed to own your website, simply go to an old archive of yours on the Web Archive site to prove it was yours.  You can also archive your website to see how much you have improved since the last time you have archived it, or if you are missing data that used to be on your old site.  In a short description, Web Archive is like a time machine for the web, to look back at what sites used to look like.
